Can-Do-Ability: Answers and Solutions from my personal experiences of living with a disability

A Must Watch - Britain's Missing Top Model

2 Mar 2011Tonight marks the beginning of BBC’s hit show ‘Britain’s Missing Top Model’ on free to air television in Australia.

The six part series, which aired in the UK in 2008, follows the journey of eight young women who aspire to join the modelling industry, they all share one unique characteristic when it comes to the world of modelling, they all have a disability.

The girls must compete against each other in different challenges, but there can only be one winner, who will be photographed by renowned photographer Rankin.

In one of the first episodes, the girls have to strip down to their underwear and pose in a shop front window as living mannequins, a task which would be quite daunting to any woman, not to mention one with a disability. But the girls take it in their stride and (most of them) perform like professionals.

The girls live in a house together for the duration of the series, their various disabilities cause personality clashes, emotions to surface and fights to break out; there’ll be tears and tantrums. Despite this, they also make a strong bond with one another and start the beginning of what is to hopefully be lifelong friendships.

Their disabilities range from paralysis, missing limbs, to hearing impairments, some from injuries and some from birth. The girls, who are all different in their own way, are also very beautiful in their own way.... Which I guess is why they were chosen out of the hundreds of applicants to battle it out for that winning title.

Three years on, with the winner long decided, the aspiring models have all ventured off to do their own side projects, all with the same message. The message of inclusion for people with disabilities into the rest of the world.

Don’t miss this ground breaking series as these eight disabled women embark on their voyage of self discovery, it begins tonight at 9:30pm AEST on ABC 2. It just recently finished being aired on Foxtel and Austar on the Bio channel, but now for those who don’t have the luxury of pay TV, you can enjoy the journey too!!
