Can-Do-Ability: Answers and Solutions from my personal experiences of living with a disability

A Great Place To Make New Friends And Kick Up Your Heels

8 Jul 2011Breakaway Recreation and Holiday Service Inc, is a great organisation that assists adults from the Western Sydney area, with intellectual disabilities, by getting them out and about, experiencing activities that they wouldn’t necessarily get a chance to participate in.

Based in the Western Suburbs of Sydney, in Penrith, the service’s staff and volunteers are committed to broadening their member’s lives, by encouraging great friendships, social involvement and recreational activities.

The service offers trips around town, long day trips, even the opportunity to travel overseas! The member’s are always kept in mind when planning new outings. Quarterly planning meetings are held, where everyone gets together to discuss possible future activities.

Some of the most recent events include: going to the movies, a day trip up to Bathurst, where the group got to pan for gold, and do a lap around Bathurst’s famous race track, discos, a day trip to the world famous Sydney Cricket Ground for a personal tour of the stadium, watching the dog races, where members were able to put on a small bet or two at one of the local racetracks.

So if you, or someone you know, is over the age of 18, and has an intellectual disability, and the idea of being part of an organisation like this would benefit, then give Breakaway a call, or send them an email so you don’t miss out on any other awesome trips they’ve got planned for the near future!

Upcoming trips include an extreme jet boat ride on Sydney Harbour, where there is NO speed-limit, a night out at a comedy theatre restaurant, a Master-Chef Pizza night, where the gang will be cooking their own wood-fired pizza’s, more discos, some bowling, a movie night, a whole day experiencing the beautiful clean crisp air of the Hunter Valley, where they’ll also be taking a wine tour, go-kart racing and a stack more!

If you’d like to become a part of Breakaway’s fun filled group, or for more information, go to www.breakawayservices.org.au or phone Sue on: 0416 175 098.
